iRex Iliad Review: Is this the Ebook for You?

The iRex Iliad ebook reader is quite possibly the best of the portable ebook readers on the market today (but as we compare ereaders, we have to note that it's also the most expensive.) This ebook reader features a Linux platform, and an active Internet forum committed to offering ideas for improving this electronic device. It offers great flexibility and portability, as well as a good alternative in areas in the world where Kindle is not yet available.

The iRex Iliad ebook reader features a sizable reading screen that is clear and brightly lit. An advantage we found while doing the ebook reader comparison is that the reader features internal wireless internet capability and a long battery life. This device supports nearly all file formats, with the noteworthy exception of doc files. Unfortunately, as we performed the book readers comparisons, it was agreed that the ebook reader’s inability to support .doc file format is one of the biggest drawbacks in its design.

Despite this downside, the mobi files format is supported by this ebook reader, and thousands of books can be downloaded and read on the iRex Iliad ebook reader at no extra charge. Books can be downloaded by connecting a special cable to your computer and downloading them from the hard drive, or by using the wi-fi and downloading them directly from their Internet source. This ebook reader features an internal storage memory of 128 MB, but supports a variety of external memory cards. The storage devices supported on the iRex Iliad ebook reader include SD, CF, and USB drives that can be used to dramatically increase the device’s storage capacity, up to a maximum of 1 GB.

The page-turning function sometimes results in a very brief delay. This momentarily blank screen, though, isn’t much different from the way one’s eyes react to the turning of a page with a real book. Another minor drawback to the iRex Iliad ebook reader is the use of the stylus on the touch screen. Sometimes, despite calibrating the stylus for accuracy, it still seems to be off just a little bit, making the stylus and touchscreen functions a little more difficult to use.

Overall, as we compare ereaders, it appears that the wide availability of reading material, storage capacity, and large screen make this ebook reader one of the best choices on the market. It is somewhat more expensive than other ebook readers though, so decide for yourself whether or not the extra cost is worth the many helpful features and overall results you’ll see with the iRex Iliad ebook reader.
